Global Kurdish Film Festival Q&A with director Çayan Demirel and Ertugrul Mavioglu for their documentary Bakur | North & 38, moderated by Taner Tan and Berivan Irmak.

Bakûr Film Synopsis:

Bakur follows one side of the war going on in Turkey for decades: the PKK guerrillas. To date, the PKK has lost over 30 thousand of its members in combat against the Turkish State. What is the PKK’s perception of the state, justice, and authority? How did the Kurdish movement evolve over the years into a battle for freedom founded on the women’s rights movement? In search of answers to all these questions, Bakur introduces women and men who have chosen to join the armed resistance in order to create a new future.

Çayan Demirel was born in Istanbul in 1977. He graduated from the faculty of economics and then started working on documentaries with oral history projects. In 2006, Demirel completed his first documentary ‘38’ about Dersim Massacre, and then Çayan founded Surela Film Production in 2009. In 2009, he won Best Documentary Award from various festivals, which led him to directed Bakur in 2015 together with Ertuğrul Mavioğlu.

Çayan Demirel was born in Istanbul in 1977. He graduated from the faculty of economics and then started working on documentaries with oral history projects. In 2006, Demirel completed his first documentary ‘38’ about Dersim Massacre, and then Çayan founded Surela Film Production in 2009. In 2009, he won Best Documentary Award from various festivals, which led him to directed Bakur in 2015 together with Ertuğrul Mavioğlu.

Ertuğrul Mavioğlu was 19 years old at the time of the September 12th, 1980 military coup. He spent 8 years in jail for political reasons during the period between 1980 and 1991. During his periods of freedom, he completed his degree in journalism. He worked as a journalist for nearly 30 years. Mavioğlu has received two awards for investigative journalism from the Progressive Journalists Association. In 2006, Ertuğrul was a co-director along with Sedat Yılmaz on Bakur.
